Division of Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine where the digestive system and its disorders are studied and treated. The Division of Gastroenterology at St. Paul’s is composed of 11 gastroenterologists who are active provincially, nationally and internationally.
The Division of Gastroenterology strives to deliver uncompromising world-class gastrointestinal health care.
Dr. Enns is presently the Head of the Division of Gastroenterology participating in teaching, training at all levels (medical student, residents, fellows and advanced fellows) as well as running a clinical practice focusing not only endoscopic procedures but on medical advances in GI. He is actively involved in research in most areas of Gastroenterology but tends to publish primarily around areas of endoscopy.
Dr Amar received his Bachelor of Science at McGill University, and then completed medical school at the University of Toronto. Internal medicine and GI training were at the University of Toronto and at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He then carried out 2 years of research in cellular changes in IBD related cancer risk sponsored by the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada.
Dr. Bressler is the Director of the Advanced IBD training program at UBC. Dr. Bressler received his MD from the University of British Columbia and completed his residency in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the University of Toronto. He received an MS in Epidemiology from the Harvard Public School of Health and completed an advanced fellowship in IBD at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bressler is a recognized expert in inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Hin Hin Ko is a Clinical Associate Professor at University of British Columbia and she practices at St. Paul’s Hospital.
She completed her training in Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC and subsequently received her MD degree from the University of Toronto. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at UBC. She further completed a year of fellowship in Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Toronto. Her special interests are viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, autoimmune liver disease and eosinophilic esophagitis. Besides clinical work, she is actively involved in clinical research and teaching.
Dr. Eric Lam completed his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Alberta in 2002 and completed a Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at the University of Alberta in 2003. He then went on to further subspecialize in endoscopic ultrasound at the Université de Montréal completed in 2004. He then returned to St. Paul’s Hospital where he has been on staff since 2004. His clinical interests include pancreaticobiliary diseases, premalignant tumors of the GI tract and endoscopic innovation.
He has completed additional training in Japan to perform endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early cancers and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of spastic diseases of the esophagus. He has also been the Program Director for the Adult Gastroenterology Training Program since 2016.
Dr. Yvette Leung went to medical school at the University of Calgary and completed her medical residency at the University of British Columbia. She went on to complete her Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Calgary and an Advanced IBD Fellowship at the University of Chicago prior to becoming faculty as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary. In 2016 she joined Pacific Gastroenterology Associates and is clinical faculty at UBC. Her main clinical focus is Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the safety of biologics during pregnancy.
Dr. Whittaker received his Bachelor of Science (Hon Mathematics) and M.D. from the University of British Columbia. He did internal medicine training and gastroenterology training at the University of Toronto followed by a Medical Research Counsil Fellowship in the field of nutrition under the supervision of Dr. K. N. Jeejeebhoy. From 1984 to 1988, he was on active staff at UBC Hospital and since 1988 he has been on the active staff at St. Paul's Hospital.
Dr. Ramji is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, practicing at the St. Paul’s hospital site. He completed his training in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. He thereafter also completed Medical school, Internal medicine and Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of British Columbia. He undertook a Hepatology fellowship at the University of Toronto with a focus in viral hepatitis.
Dr. Rosenfeld completed his undergraduate training in Science and Medicine at UBC in 1992. He worked as a family physician and Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Family Practice at UBC until completing an Internal Medicine Residency, Gastroenterology and Advanced Fellowships in IBD at UBC. He holds an MHSc. In Clinical Epidemiology from UBC. Dr. Rosenfeld practices with the St. Paul’s Hospital Gastroenterology group and has a clinical practice focus in IBD. He is an associate physician of the BC Home Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Program.
Dr. Neal Shahidi is a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist at St. Paul's Hospital with a focus on the screening and management of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colorectum including the application of organ-sparing minimally invasive endoscopic resection techniques (cold snare resection CSR, endoscopic mucosal resection EMR, endoscopic submucosal dissection ESD). He also performs ablative procedures for Barrett's Esophagus and tunnelling procedures/third space endoscopy for motility disorders of the gastrointestinal tract such as Achalasia (per-oral endoscopic myotomy POEM).
He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of British Columbia in 2018 and his interventional endoscopy fellowship at Westmead Hospital in Sydney Australia in 2020. He is currently completing his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Sydney focusing on delineating a selective resection algorithm for colorectal polyps. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts/book chapters and 60 conference abstracts in high-impact journals including Gastroenterology, Gut, Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopy. He is currently a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee.
Dr. Telford completed a Bachelor of Science degree in honors physiology, a Medical Degree and an internal medicine residency at UBC. She then pursued a gastroenterology fellowship and an advanced endoscopy fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Telford also completed her Master’s in Public Health at Harvard School of Public Health. She has a general gastroenterology practice with a focus on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). She is presently a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia working out of St. Paul’s Hospital and the Medical Director for the British Columbia Colon Screening Program since 2008. Her areas of interest are outcomes in endoscopy and colorectal cancer screening.

Pacific Gastroenterology Associates was established in 2004 with a mission to provide quality care to patients. The Clinic has grown steadily since 2004, servicing patients, with referrals from primary care providers and other specialists.
The Gastroenterologists comprise the Division of Gastroenterology at St. Paul’s Hospital.
Endoscopic procedures are performed at St. Paul's Hospital and at our out of hospital endoscopy unit, the Gastrointestinal Research Institute, located at 1190 Hornby Street.
