Division of Endocrinology
Endocrinology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the endocrine system (glands and hormones) and metabolism.
Dr. Marshall Dahl was appointed Head of the SPH Division of Endocrinology in 2018. He is the President of the Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of B.C and past President of BCMA and Vancouver Community of Care Medical Dental and Allied Staff. He has held a number of roles within the leadership of provincial and national groups representing organized medicine. Dr. Dahl’s clinical and research interests include diabetes care system transformation, Telehealth (evaluation of a province-wide implementation in Endocrinology) with a special interest in transgender medicine and is author of evidence-based guidelines for transgender endocrine care. In 2018 Dr. Dahl received the David M. Bachop Gold Medal for Distinguished Medical Service and in 2019 he received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the UBC Division of Endocrinology.
Dr. Greg Bondy is an Associate member of the Division of Endocrinology. He participates in the SPH Diabetes Centre, Healthy Heart Program Prevention Clinic, Diabetes Health Centre and the Immunodeficiency Clinic. Dr. Bondy is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Dr. Pol Darras joined the Division after he completed a Fellowship in Lipidology and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention under the supervision of Dr. Gordon Francis. Dr. Darras is an active member of the SPH Division, participating in the Healthy Heart Program Prevention Clinic and the Diabetes Health Centre. He is also appointed as the Site Director for SPH Endocrinology, responsible for orientating and evaluating the rotating residents through the Division. In 2020 Dr. Darras received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the UBC Division of Endocrinology.
Dr. Gordon Francis’ research focus is on NonHDL-cholesterol, macrophage, and lipid-lowering drug influences on smooth muscle foam cell formation, phenotype and fate in atherosclerosis. Dr. Francis received the 2020 MSFHR Health Professional-Investigator Award for his research: "Redefining atherosclerosis: Characterizing and targeting smooth muscle cell foam cells for the treatment and prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke". He is Director of the Beedie Family Fellowship in Lipidology and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, a one year BC postgraduate training opportunity in the Healthy Heart Program, Prevention Clinic where he has a clinical practice.
Dr. Sabrina Gill is a Clinical Professor at UBC. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences followed by her Medical degree at University of British Columbia (UBC). After completing her Internal Medicine training at the University of Alberta and subspecialty training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at UBC, Dr. Gill pursued her post-doctoral research training in Women’s Health at the Reproductive Endocrine Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Gill completed her Masters degree in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her clinical and research focus includes metabolic bone diseases, osteoporosis and calcium disorders, endocrine oncology, diabetes, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary and women’s health. She is the Medical Director of the SPH Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic and the Women’s Endocrine Health Clinic and participates in the Thyroid Clinic. In 2017, Dr. Gill received the UBC Division of Endocrinology Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.
Dr. Michelle Johnson has an active clinical and research interest in neuroendocrine disorders. She established a Pituitary Teaching Clinic where residents, Fellows and medical students attend. In addition she established a quarterly Pituitary Journal Club and a quarterly multidisciplinary pituitary rounds combing endocrinology, neurosurgery, radiology and radiation oncology. She is currently collaborating with neurosurgeons to establish a multidisciplinary pituitary clinic. In 2018 Dr. Johnson received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award presented by UBC Endocrinology.
Dr. David Kendler is regarded as one of North America's foremost osteoporosis experts and has led osteoporosis programs at Children and Women’s Hospital, St. Vincent's Hospital, and St. Paul’s Hospital. He is the director of the Osteoporosis Centre of British Columbia and Prohealth Clinical Research, a major North American centre for clinical trials in the area of osteoporosis. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada and Chairs the Western Osteoporosis Alliance and is Past-President of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. He is a member of the Committee of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and is co-Chair of the Western Osteoporosis Alliance. He has been awarded the John Bilezekian ISCD Global Leadership Award.. Dr. Kendler was a founding member and has served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Menopause Society. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers on osteoporosis therapies, osteoporosis risk assessment technologies, and autoimmune thyroid disease.
Dr. Stuart Kreisman has been a member of the SPH Thyroid Clinic since its inception and also participates in the SPH Diabetes Health Centre. He has devoted his clinical expertise and experience for many years by participating/hosting the SPH Endocrine noon rounds, a weekly informal rounds session attended by trainees, faculty and other subspecialities. Dr. Kreisman is very passionate about reducing secondhand smoke and overall smoking prevalence since 2004. He played a crucial role in working with the Vancouver Parks’ Board towards the 2010 Smoke-free Parks and Beaches Bylaw and his most recent efforts include working towards smoke-free multi-unit dwellings. His efforts in this regard are supported by Vancouver Coastal Health Tobacco Control, and Physicians for a Smoke-free Canada.
Dr. Angela Liu has a clinical focus in women’s health, reproductive endocrinology and transgender medicine. Her research interests include the study of models of care for patients with Turner Syndrome and other multisystem reproductive endocrine health concern. In 2019, she received the PHCRI and St. Paul’s Foundation Early Career Clinician Investigator award in support of her research. She is currently an endocrinologist in the SPH Diabetes Health Centre.
Dr. Jessica MacKenzie-Feder’s clinical interests include adrenal, calcium, menstrual disorders/ovarian dysfunction, osteoporosis, pituitary and thyroid. Her research is focused on adrenal and pituitary/neuroendocrine. Dr. MacKenzie-Feder is part of the pituitary rotation for the UBC Endocrinology Fellows where she devotes her expertise and knowledge in this area. She was the Site Director at SPH Endocrinology for many years, and was responsible for orientating and evaluating the rotating residents through the Division.
Dr. Monika Pawlowska’s clinical and research interests include adrenal, calcium, diabetes, metabolic bone disease and thyroid. She participates in the SPH Metabolic Bone Clinic and teaches/mentors Fellows and residents during a 4 week rotation in this subspeciality. She is President of the Endocrine Research Society, which conducts medical research and educates the public and medical professionals. The Endocrine Research Society hosts two successful annual conferences in Vancouver: BC Endocrine Day and Diabetes Directors Seminar. Each event features distinguished speakers from across North America and are very popular among the medical community.
Dr. Ehud Ur’s research interests include neuroendocrine disorders, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. He is actively engaged in both laboratory and clinical research, and has published over 150 papers, chapters and abstracts in these fields. He has been an investigator in clinical trials of new agents in diabetes, lipid disorders, Cushings Disease, Acromegaly and obesity and has also directed studies looking at diabetes care using new models of delivery. He participates in the SPH Thyroid Clinic and Diabetes Health Centre. Dr. Ur was the Head of the UBC Division of Endocrinology from 2007 to 2018.
Dr. Adam White is an active member of the SPH Division of Endocrinology, who has a research interest in Medical Education. His clinical areas of interest include adrenal, diabetes, male hypogonadism, low testosterone, osteoporosis, pituitary and thyroid. He is currently the Head of the Western Canada Insulin Pump Center, which is engaged in providing clinical care for patients using insulin pump technology. Dr. White is the Secretary of the Endocrine Research Society which recruits a UBC medical student in a gap year, to prepare them for medical residency.

Thyroid Clinic
The Thyroid Clinic at St. Paul’s is the first clinic dedicated to the diagnosis and management of thyroid cancers and thyroid hormone disorders in BC. The clinic represents a multidisciplinary collaboration between nurses and physicians, including specialists in endocrinology (hormones), surgery, radiation therapy, radiology and pathology. This clinic diagnoses and treats patients with a variety of methods all in one location. The clinic offers diagnostic facilities, complex treatment regimens and educational resources to help patients understand their condition and deal with the challenges and is also a leading center of education of thyroid related disorders to other physicians and students.

Existing or suspected thyroid condition, referred by GP or walk-in clinic.
Metabolic Bone Disease (Osteoporosis Clinic)
The Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital is designed to provide specialized clinical care for patients with and at risk of metabolic bone disease including osteoporosis, steroid induced bone loss, fragility fractures, parathyroid related bone disease, and genetic bone diseases. The clinic also provides an opportunity for trainees to gain experience in metabolic bone disease in a supervised setting. Clinical services offered include general screening, diagnosis and therapeutic options as appropriate. Patients require a doctor referral.

Must be referred by General Practitioner, specialist or walk-in clinic and include a recent BMD report (bone mineral density test) with imaging.
