Division of Nephrology

Providence Health Care has the most integrated kidney treatment, research and educational programs in British Columbia with 16 nephrologists and approximately 350 staff members including nurses (RPNs & LPNs), renal technicians, biomedical engineering technologists, dietitians, physiotherapists, social workers, pharmacists & administrative/program staff; providing care to patients living within the Vancouver region, across BC and in the Yukon.

At St. Paul's Hospital, one of two adult academic health science centres in the province, our patients benefit from the latest research in kidney disease from early intervention to dialysis and kidney transplantation. St. Paul's Hospital is the primary site of our Renal Program, providing a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory care services. Providence Health Care also operates seven community hemodialysis units and several kidney function clinics across Vancouver Coastal Health.

Independent Dialysis

The Providence Health Care Renal Program supports eligible patients to manage their own hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis treatments. This is appealing for many patients because it gives them more control over the location, timing, frequency and duration of their dialysis treatments.

Patients are referred through the Renal Program at Providence Health Care or Vancouver General Hospital.

Nephrology Outreach Clinics

Outreach clinics:

Nephrologist based at Providence Health Care supports a number of outreach clinics. In-person clinic visits (supplemented by virtual follow-up) is provided in many communities including Whitehorse, Bella Coola, & Sechelt.

Most patients requiring renal replacement therapy (home-based dialysis) in the Yukon territory are followed by the St. Paul's Hospital kidney program.
